We began in 2008 with pilot projects on a fruit farm in the Theewaterskloof district and at a fruit packhouse in Paarl in the Western Cape. In these communities, our implementation model was to simultaneously offer programmes in the three core areas of education, health and social development to all age-groups within the community.  Through a process of 'action research', these programmes were developed, refined and documented in conjunction with various experts in a multi-disciplinary team. 

The programmes are based on the latest understanding of developmental cognitive neuroscience and are designed according to the Howard Gardner theory of multiple intelligences; linguistic, musical, logical-mathematical, bodily-kinaesthetic, visual-spatial, intra-personal and inter-personal.  These ‘intelligences’ correspond with functional domains in the human brain.  Additional to this theory, the eighth intelligence, moral values, underlies the other seven.  Together with a nurturing environment, such integrated stimulation of children at a young age increases specific intelligence capacity and significantly improves children’s functional capacity later in life. 

Prior to intervention, cognitive, perceptual and scholastic developmental levels of children on the pilot site were found to be, on average, 2 to 3 years behind their chronological age.  After two and a half years of intervention with the AmazingBrainz Programme, children aged 5 to 6 tested within the norms for a child of their age.

The TVPS test determines a child’s visual-perceptual skills and these results indicate that a

solid foundation for reading, writing and arithmetic has been laid.
